A new baby named 'Asian Journal of Transfusion Science' (AJTS) has taken birth in the international scenario of medical publication. It actually happened after a long gestation period. Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology (ISBTI) is the keeper of the journal and all members nurtured it throughout the gestational period. The delivery was not uneventful. It was a difficult labor and the Editorial team had to go through a painful phase. However, the result was good with a delivery of a pink baby.

If you go to the history of this journal, it is the extension of 'Transfusion Bulletin' of ISBTI. The first issue of the Transfusion Bulletin was published in the year 1980 and it disseminated the knowledge of transfusion science to all members of ISBTI for 26 years. There were some irregularities in publishing issues of the bulletin in the past under different Editors, because of unavoidable reasons. However, during last 7 years all issues were published regularly. The bulletin was circulated quarterly on regular basis among more than 2000 members of ISBTI, all medical college libraries and all blood banks (about 2200 in number) in India. It was also sent to about 50 selected members in Bangladesh. All these activities were carried out free of cost to readers. Cost recovery was done from advertisements in the bulletin.

At one stage we realized that we started receiving good articles, which needed wider attention in scientific community in terms of visibility and recognition. It was not possible due to lack of limited scope and circulation of the bulletin. It was decided in the 30th ISBTI national conference that AJTS was to be started in the place of bulletin. It was a Herculean task to be accomplished within 10 months, which included receiving good articles, peer reviewed, constitution of the Editorial Board consisting of 29 extremely knowledgeable faculty from abroad and India, constitution of Section Editors and Advisory Board. The Editorial team has taken it as a challenge and the first printed copy has been brought out.

Is it necessary to publish another journal in Transfusion Science? We feel, yes. Transfusion Medicine ( per se Science) is a newly developed specialty and with specialized credentials for about 30 years. However, there are only few international journals available with global circulation. There are also limited numbers of regional journals in different parts of the world. Hematology and pathology is allied branch of transfusion medicine, but do not cover all aspects of this specialty. The Advisory Committee conceived the idea to open a new vista for all scientific workers to publish their scientific work in this peer-reviewed journal. This opening is for transfusion and other scientists all over the globe in English language. It is a special window particularly for the Asian scientists to put forward their scientific materials to the world community. This journal will try to become a mouthpiece of the scientific community from developing world for the first time. Whatever small scientific information they might want to convey, it will get a priority in any form.

This journal has received an ISSN number and is looking for registering in different indexing media. AJTS has already launched a web-site (www.ajts.org) where web version of the journal will also be available. The Editorial team is happy to present few very good articles in the first issue. We will be open for any positive suggestions and we will continuously upgrade the journal. This is not the baby of the Editorial Board; we own this baby. We will have to make it crawl, walk and run faster so that it caches up with other high impact journals of the world within the shortest possible time. The Editorial team feels happy for the modest beginning and grateful to a large section of experts, ISBTI members for their cooperation.
