Sir,

In the last 20 years, clinical transfusion therapy has evolved from whole blood transfusion to blood components and derivatives. While, many choices of blood products have complicated the physician's decision-making process, it has also made hemotherapy more specific and effective. The transfusion medicine physician, therefore, must be adept at balancing patient care issues, regulatory standards, manufacturing principles, and resource limitations in meeting patient needs. It becomes important that MD students are trained in this specialty so that they are properly equipped to render special consultative service.

Presently, there are 19 centers across the country conducting Medical Council of India (MCI) approved MD courses in transfusion medicine. Besides this, there are 4-5 centers that have received MCI approval and are likely to start the MD program in the next year. Since our discipline is relatively a newer branch of medical sciences, there are some shortcomings with regard to the training of post graduates, and their internal and final assessments. Moreover, some of the centers have a well-developed infrastructure while some are having only the basic facilities. As a result of this, the quality of teaching/training varies from center to center in the country. Also, there is no uniform pattern of final assessment followed.

To overcome the above mentioned shortcomings, a 2-day workshop was conducted on the 28 th and 29 th August 2012 by the Department of Immunohematology & Blood Transfusion, Ahmedabad, which was attended by all Heads of Department of Transfusion Medicine across India. The total number of participants was 34 and they were from the following centers:

  8. Department of Transfusion Medicine, KEM College and Seth G S Hospital, Mumbai
  9. Department of Transfusion Medicine, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune
  10. Department of Transfusion Medicine, B J Medical College & Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad
  11. Department of Transfusion Medicine, The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai

This was a unique workshop in the sense that never has such a program being organized that brought all the departmental heads of a subject together on a common platform to discuss the curriculum and training, rather than some of the regular workshops where scientific topics are largely discussed. It was also unique because there was total participation and everyone had a common goal of how to strengthen the blood transfusion services in the country. The topics which were discussed at the workshop were the curriculum, teaching, training, and assessment pattern in the field, which was proposed to be uniform throughout the country. Also, the job opportunities for the students who succesfully completed MD, were discussed.

Some important recommendations of this workshop were:

  1. A uniformity in training, teaching, and examination pattern across the country, based on a competency-based curriculum.
  2. Revising the current curriculum.
  3. Creating a common platform for interaction amongst people in the field.
  4. Developing the "Standard Inspection Form" for MCI; this being a new faculty.
It was largely a unique experience for everyone and such meetings/workshops must be a regular feature in all faculties of medicine, as ours is constantly changing field where newer technologies are introduced practically daily. Hence, the need for updating our curriculums becomes mandatory and who could do this mammoth task better than the experts on the subjects themselves.

Organizing such a program was not without hurdles, but for the inputs and constant hard efforts of Dr. M. D.
