In the 21 st century, the Blood Transfusion service has gained considerable importance. It has come a long way from the landmark discovery of ABO blood groups in 1900 by Landsteiner. The use of blood and blood products has made possible many sophisticated complex operations in Neuro, Orthopedic and Transplantation surgery to be successful. It is the backbone of success story in chemotherapy. The Transfusion Medicine personnel, however, bear a great responsibility towards the safety and efficacy of blood and its component therapy. Therefore, the personnel involved in this discipline have to be educated properly in both theoretical and as well as practical aspects.

In order to avoid the Transfusion reaction, a great number of preventive measures need to be taken. In that context, this issue of Vox Sanguinis forms an important publication for the transfusion medicine practice. This book deals with A to Z of transfusion medicine in a very lucid manner. The theory as well as practical aspect has been covered adequately by this manual in a simple and systematic manner with appropriate diagrams. It starts with fundamentals in Hematology, Immunology and Genetics of blood group and HLA system, which has been covered in a very simple systematic way. This forms the theoretical background not only for the technologists but for the doctors engaged in Transfusion medicine.

The detailed information given in this issue covers the updated knowledge related to Transfusion medicine. Each section of the manual deals with objectives that provide summary as well as additional learning activity. The illustrations given are very appropriate and neat, which makes the student confident in learning the pathophysiology. The practical utility of this publication is tremendous and it can be taken as a very good practical book for the trainees. Simultaneously, the information covers a comprehensive glossary and index and list of abbreviations. However, this book does not deal with stem cell harvest, storage and cord blood banking. It would have been nice if some molecular techniques in transfusion medicine would have been included in short.

To summarize, this publication adequately describes the theory and practice of Blood Transfusion service in a very concise manner and can be recommended as a handy book for Transfusion Medicine personnel, which will be of great help in smaller laboratories too. Therefore, I congratulate the authors for bringing out an excellent book in the discipline of Transfusion Medicine.
