The pandemic continuing to have a huge impact on scientific meetings throughout the world, many conferences have been cancelled, moved to dates in 2021 or replaced by virtual meetings. The 45th Annual Conference of ISBTI, TRANSCON 2020 was organized on virtual platform for the first time on 27th and 28th February 2021. While the format was being changed for virtual meeting, the organizing committee focused on maximizing the participation from Transfusion Fraternity, especially postgraduates, technologists who had not attended a national event for more than a year period and expanded the event to 2 days and parallel sessions to maximize the benefit to participants.

The scientific program was set in accordance to the theme– “Changing Paradigm in Transfusion Medicine” and faculties from all over country were invited to be a part of the national event. The organizing committee planned to go with pre-recorded sessions for effective time management and to avoid last minute technical glitches or network issues.

TRANSCON 2020 was inaugurated virtually in presence of Chief Guest Shri Deepak Jacob, IAS, Project Director, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society, TRANSCON2020 organizing President, Dr Subash, Organizing Secretary Dr. Joshua Daniel, and Joint Secretary Dr. Deepti Sachan.

The academic sessions started on time with the contemporary Transfusion medicine issues faced globally with the session on “Insights of COVID19. TRANSCON 2020 – ISBTI oration award was presented to Dr. Sanmukh R Joshi – and Oration talk was on Discovery on Blood groups in India. Scientific sessions on Changing paradigms in blood centre labs and latest concepts in TTD had set the conference in full swing while post lunch session by eminent speakers on Voluntary blood donation included changing scenarios in donor motivations involving social networking and implementing artificial intelligence during donor counseling. Panel discussions by eminent panelists on Convalescent plasma, collection and testing, experience shared on preparedness for Pandemic and debates on core transfusion issues were the highlights on day 1. Oral papers were presented on both days by 28 young postgraduates on various research topics.

The conference had virtual trade exhibition and vendors participated and showcased their latest equipments and interacted with delegates. Day 1 concluded with AGM meeting. On second day, morning session on Regulations and accreditations in India, updated the delegates on recent updates followed by many important sessions on quality management system, technologies enhancing bedside transfusion practices, year in review 2020 and so on. Both days, quizzes were planned by Dr Abhishek (PG Quiz) and Dr. Sreedevi (Technologist quiz) before closing the sessions to bring competitive spirit with fun experience.

With more than 750 delegates, 100+ faculties (chairpersons, guest speakers, panelists, moderators, judges), and huge participation from Post graduates in form of paper and poster presentation, TRANSCON2020- first virtual ISBTI conference remain committed to provide recent updates, education and a platform for interactions among the delegates and experts. Recorded sessions with online access and nearly 200 e-posters are availed for delegates for viewing after conference. Although we could not meet in person, ISBTI – TN Chapter acknowledges all participating faculties, organizing committee TRANSCON2020, our industry Sponsors and all participants to make it success.
